(Thermo) Fisher Scientific’s LabReporter Magazine
I was (Thermo) Fisher Scientific’s LabReporter editor for 2 years, but I also wrote a couple of its cover stories. Both were so fun to write! The first one, “The Retailers’ Science,” discussed a few of the subtle psychological tricks retailers perform to encourage you to spend-sped-spend! The second cover story, “The Bits and Bytes of Travel–Digitizing Your Vacation,” presented the then-innovative digital gadgets available to make vacations more fun.
Celebrating (Thermo) Fisher Scientific’s 100 Years
(Thermo) Fisher Scientific turned 100 years old in 2002. To celebrate, various communication department writers composed articles These were posted for on Fisher’s website for a week or two at a time. I wrote three of these special postings. Two are available for you to read here. “It’s All Relative: DNA Testing and Genealogy” discussed how two different types of DNA testing can be used to find out who your ancestors are. The other posting, “Raising the Bar Code,” is about what bar codes are, how they originated, and how they are used.
(Thermo) Fisher Scientific Headline Discoveries Article
(Thermo) Fisher Scientific has a science education division that publishes a newsletter. LabReporter articles were often re-purposed for the school-age audience, the publication also published lots of original articles. I wrote “Saving the Ugliest Duck-like Thing” to highlight the platypus.
Other (Thermo) Fisher Scientific Projects
Writers were assigned different projects according to their availability and product responsibilities. I was in charge of the Chromatography product line, and, working closely with the vendors, I generated a lot of material under that topic: catalog pages, web pages, brochures and flyers. I also penned marketing materials for other (Thermo) Fisher Scientific products and programs.

My first article published through my first full-time editor position! The “Pseudosciences” cover story briefly discusses many so-called sciences used throughout the centuries to diagnose ailments.
